Ask anyone what the main pillars of the local economy are and they will answer "tourism" and "real estate". Visitors to our sunny clime, Mediterranean shores and many golf courses have traditionally had two main options: staying in a hotel or renting an apartment. In recent years, the two have increasingly become competitors of one another, with families generally favouring the economy and independence of an apartment and couples happy to opt for the pampering and service of a nice hotel. Like everything else in life, each option has its pros and cons; hotel rooms lack the freedom of movement and space of an apartment while in the latter you have to spend your holiday making your own breakfast-and cleaning it up.

The new Vasari Vacation Resort, which opens its doors this month, offers a priviledged service-a third option, as it were-for those who wish to combine the best elements of hotels and apartments in one holiday. Providing the independence and informality of an apartment, coupled with the comforts, pampering and range of services of a hotel, seems a perfectly natural direction for the industry to evolve into. After all, as General Manager, Juan Vilcinskas, says, "Hotels and apartments can be highly complementary within a single concept and, if designed and executed properly, can offer visitors the best of both worlds." It is clear that offering the best of both worlds was an important part of the philosophy around which the resort was developed, starting with the choice of location and ending with the accommodation, facilities and service provided.

The location of the resort, within the La Alzambra urbanisation, offers the privacy and tranquillity that has made it possible to create a peaceful oasis within which visitors can relax, surrounded by greenery, swimming pools and restaurants. Enjoying an al fresco meal at the Vasari restaurant you could be forgiven for not realising that lively Puerto Banús is literally just a stroll away. The ability to disconnect from your surroundings or immerse yourself in them at will is a luxury indeed, allowing visitors to the Vasari Vacation Resort a free choice between the resort and its facilities and Puerto Banús, the beach and the nearby golf courses. In all, there are 57 luxury apartments, designed by Marbella architect Manuel Burgos Cornejo, integrated into the main body of the hotel while also offering privacy.

There are independent entrances, so there is no need to go through the lobby and pass by the reception desk. Instead, the reception, restaurant and spa area form the centre point of the resort, the place where people meet and also the point from which the services typical of a luxury hotel are operated. These include daily cleaning of the apartments, 24-hour reception, laundry and dry cleaning service, babysitting, reservations, car hire, transfers and even a secretarial service. The additional food shopping service, however, is something that is specific to the hybrid concept that Vasari have created.

Apart from being comparable in size to very large and expensive hotel suites, the apartments of one, two and three bedrooms feature a combination of comfortable 'home away from home' appeal and the kind of luxuries that you would normally find in good hotels, such as power showers, hydromassage baths and a direct line to the reception. From the terraces the view is of the tropical grounds, with swimming pools, waterfalls and palm trees forming the backdrop of a sunny chiringuito bar. Being family-friendly means the resort is child-friendly, so there are lots of activities for children that will allow their parents to laze by the pool or have a game of paddle tennis. The Vasari Restaurant, likewise, offers a stylish day and night time venue where adults can indulge in refined Mediterranean cuisine yet children are not restricted to a filet mignon. In bringing together the best of a private apartment and a luxury hotel, the Vasari Vacation Resort truly makes a lot of sense as a great holiday destination.
